It was an emotionally charged day yeserday as supporters, ex players and management staff came together to recognise Stephen Baxters time at Crusaders and his acheivements by joining together at a Lunch and game in honour of him.
After a packed out lunch where guest speakers spoke about Stephen in high regard Stephen then took the mic to express his thoughts and share a few stories about his time. After some great food and craic it was then out to the pitch to be recieved warmly by those attending the Crusaders v Derry City pre season friendly which was organised also in recognition of the Setanta Cup Final played in 2012. A guard of honour was formed through which Stephen walked into the sunshine and agin he was on the Seaview pitch to acknowledge the supporters he loyally served as a player and manager.
It was Crusaders first game and a worth while turn out for the lads and the newest squad memebers got a chance to finally stretch their legs. Derry City are in a “mini break” from league action and proved to obviously be fitter but Crusaders did run them close with everyone showing some nice touches and link up play that Crusaders supporters appreciated.
Derry City did run out eventual 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Ben Doherty after 23 minutes in the first half and a Trialist scoring eight minutes from time but it was spirit the game and the reason the game was played that will be remembered by those present.
Thanks to everyone who attended both the lunch and the game,to the speakers and organisers of the day and Derry City for playing.. It was a memorable occasion and enjoyed by those present.
