Condolences To The Family Of Damien Bryne

6th Feb 2026

The Crusaders Football Club family has been hit by another piece of sad news after learning of the passing of our ex defender Damien Bryne. A Dubliner born and bred he played for several teams in the Republic of Ireland before signing for Crusaders from 1983-85. The big centre half, who stood out with his blonde hair, was a colossus at the back and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the Irish League. Playing in a team that included fellow southerner Leo Flanagan, a young Sid Burrows, Robbie Barr, Peter Rafferty and Brian Jess to name a few, Damien was head and shoulders among many of his peers and was adored by the fans on the terraces with his approach to the game. Manager at the time Tommy Jackson had Damien's name on the team sheet every week before anyone else such was his importance. Damien left to join Ards in 1985 going on to win Irish League Player of the Year before returning down South. Damien kept in touch with Crusaders for many years after such was the bond between them.

On hearing of Damien's passing Chairman Mark Langhammer said “Sadly once again we have lost a player who played for Crusaders with distinction. Damien was everything Crusaders stood for and took the nickname ”The Hatchetmen" into most of his tackles. He was a player who came into the Irish League at that time and gave it his all and more where there was nothing held back. Damien certainly left an impression on anyone who saw him play and he is still talked about around the club"

Mark adds “ Can I on behalf of Crusaders Football Club offer the condolences and deepest sympathies to the Bryne family circle and I would like to let them know that everyone is devastated to hear of Damien's passing. He was loved at Seaview and his time at the Club will not be forgotten The fact he was inducted into Crusaders Hall of Fame in 2023 is testimony to how we felt about him. Please keep the family in our thoughts and prayers going forward”

RIP Damien
